Michele Kurtzman – Honor Athlete

Born the sixth of seven children to Don and Joan Kurtzman, Michele first swam with some of her siblings in summer league and then the Howard County YMCA beginning in 1971. Two years later, after setting National YMCA relay records, she moved to the North Baltimore Aquatic Club, where she qualified for NJO’s at 12 years old. Michele achieved numerous National Age-Group rankings. She made her first Senior National Cuts in 1974 and attended both spring and summer nationals for the next ten years. In 1978, Michele was invited to train at the Olympic Training Center and was named to the US Team for the East/West Dual Meet. After graduating from Archbishop Keough High School in 1979, Michele began a stellar collegiate career at the University of Florida. Named best All Around swimmer in her freshman year, she again was named to the US National Team where she traveled to Brazil. Now World Ranked in 200 IM and a collegiate All American, Michele capped her Junior Year at Florida with an American Record in 400 Medley Relay and the NCAA Championship. An NCAA All American in both her Junior and Senior year, Michele went on to a career in education, achieving her certification in 1990 and a Masters Degree in 1993. Still an active athlete in triathlon and running, Michele is married to Jim Greenfield and they are the parents of four children.
