James J. Dunleavy was born in Philadelphia, he was educated in Annapolis at St. Mary’s Elementary School, Annapolis High School and St. John’s College. He served in the Army during World War II as a First Lieutenant. His interest in Track while at the Naval Academy led to a long career in officiating which encompassed swimming as well.
Mr. Dunleavy, who was 79 and lived in Annapolis, retired in 1979 from the Naval Academy post office. He also once worked for the Annapolis Dairy.
He continued to serve as commissioner of the Maryland Officials Club, scheduling officials for Maryland Scholastic Association and collegiate competitions in the both track and swimming.
He also served summers as commissioner of the Central Maryland Swimming League and the Freestate Swimming League.
In 1988, he was inducted as an official into the Maryland Swimming Hall of Fame. Mr. Dunleavy passed away in April of 1991.
